The Alabama Hills region has been used for lots of movies, especially in the days of the Spaghetti Westerns. This particular rock formation served as a temple in Gunga Din with Cary Grant and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in 1939.

The amazing thing is that if you turn around, the Mt. Whitney range is right behind you. It's hard to imagine two such different terrains are so close together.
