Branch Brook winds through the trees, chattering merrily to itself as it goes. If you follow the paths, you start walking along it's banks at the small falls until you get to the official Buttermilk Falls, which is a cliff that actually contains three waterfalls and a swimming hole:

At least, it's always been three falls when we've seen it. Jen's Mom says that in spring, this becomes one really huge fall and you don't want to get too close.

Last year, it was really hot when Jen and her Mom came to this spot, certain that they would enjoy a nice swim. It turned out to be sufficient to just stick our toes in the water though, because it was cold, cold, cold.

This year, Jen clambered up to the top of the falls and worked her way around to the cascade of water that appears on the right. Fortunately, it wasn't anywhere near as cold this time, because she slipped a bit and ended up pretty wet. Luckily the camera survived to record these two shots looking down from the top of the falls:
