The water near Mammoth has a very high level of calcium carbonate.
When that water reaches the surface and boils off, the calcium
carbonate precipitates out and forms travertine. The orange area
is where water is currently flowing -- the color comes from bacteria
in the water. The white areas show where water used to flow --
once the water shifts the bacteria dies and the terraces lose
their color.
