The mighty pylon of
Edfu temple, which was built between 237 to 57 BC and dedicated
to Horus.
Many Egyptian temples have a large pylon followed by a hypostyle
hall (a flat-ceiling hall supported by columns) followed by the
actual temple building. This layout reflects their creation myth.
The pylon represents the earth suddenly rising from nothing. The
base of each column in the hypostyle hall has an inverted "V"
pattern that is meant to represent water, with the plants carved
on the column capitals rising from that water.
