The pond in front is growing two kinds of plants: in the center, you have papyrus, the symbol of lower Egypt, and around the edges are lotus, the symbol of upper Egypt. The unification of Egypt is symbolized by two hermaphroditic Nile gods tying together a spray of papyrus and a spray of lotus.
