St. Mark's is the home of four bronze horses made
in the 4th century B.C. They're very well-traveled horses: Nero brought
them to Rome, Constantine hauled them to Constantinople/Istanbul, crusaders
stole them for Venice, and Napoleon commandeered them for Paris. When
Napoleon fell, they were returned "home" to Venice. (Maybe the
Venetians were the only ones who'd kept the receipt?)
The originals are now stored indoors, but the
balcony on St. Mark's hosts these proud copies.
The building behind the horse is the Clock Tower,
which Jen loved for both the view and the fact that it had an elevator.
