This is the Four Rivers fountain in Piazza Navona,
taken during our night walk across Rome under a glorious full moon. It's
Bernini's most famous statue, and the four gods represent the four continents
that were known about in 1650.
One of the river gods faces the church of St.
Agnes, which was designed by Borromini, a student of Bernini's who turned
into his teacher's rival.
The popular story is that Bernini gave that river
god such a horrified expression because he is forced to look at the church.
The fact that the fountain was completed two years before Borromini even
started his church is one of those little facts that no one seems inclined
to remember. <grin>
